Online Skin Consultation with my Virtual Skin Bar! Are you ready to start your skin transformation today? In this blog I’ll explain how you can
Lets talk Chemical Skin Peel treatments! Although to be more accurate, they are technically facial peels as very few peels are made up of chemicals these days, they tend to be enzyme (natural) based products, such as fruit acids and sugar cane. Yes, that is true! The term Chemical Skin Peel is however still popular, so we wil refer to them as such, to avoid confusion!
As I mentioned above, Chemical Skin Peel isn’t technically the right term for these treatments anymore.
The facial peels available in the aesthetics clinics these days are more likely to be natural, enzyme based peels from fruits, can sugar, milk and wait for it – red wine! Lets raise a glass to another benefit of red wine!
The type of Chemical Skin Peel that is right for you will depend on your skin type, skin concerns and desired outcomes. There are several factors to take into account with selecting the correct peel for you (that’s my job by the way, so don’t worry, you don’t need to choose!). Some of the gentler peels can be used alongside other treatments, such as microneedling facials (click HERE to discover more about those). Other peels are stand alone treatments.
Chemical Skin Peel treatments can help with a number of different skin concerns. Different peels target different concerns, and there are some fantastic combination peels that target multiple areas at once.
Typically you will need a course of 6 treatments, spaced 14-28 days apart, depending on the type of peel used. I will also make some recommendations for lifestyle, skincare and nutrition changes that you may wish to include, in order to boost your results. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and therefore an ‘outside in and inside out’ approach will give you the best outcomes possible.
As you can see from the list of Chemical Skin Peel derivatives about, there’s not much ‘chemical’ about them! There are probably a few surprises in there too. What it is worth mentioning is that it’s important that you tell me of any allergies that you have during your consultation with me. Any allergies will be taken into account as part of the peel selection process.
Chemical Skin Peels all designed to remove the dead skin layers on the surface of your skin and to regenerate new skin cell production.
None of the peels that I offer are ablative – which means that they do not ‘burn away’ the layers of skin. Ablative Chemical Skin Peels are becoming less common these days, but such treatments should only be carried out by a qualified Doctor or Consultant.
Enzyme peels are typically made up of fruits such as papaya, pineapple, pomegranate and pumpkin. These peels are super gentle and suitable for all skin types. I often use an enzyme peel as part of a Microneedling Collagen Facial (click HERE) or my IPL illumiFacial (click HERE).
Enzyme peels will gently cleanse the skin of impurities, dead skin cells and secretions from sebaceous and sweat gland activity. The result post peel will be smooth polished skin with improved texture, tone and visibly radiant fresher skin. Enzyme treatments require no downtime, making them an extremely beneficial procedure that can be added with other treatments.
These are also a good place to start to condition your skin for further treatments and stronger peels.
Glycolic peels originate from sugar cane. Glycolic acid in what is known as an Alpha Hydroxy Acid. These are naturally occurring organic acids and they are very popular choice of peel, due to their adaptability of treating many skin conditions and concerns.
This wonder acid is water soluble and is incredible at drawing water into your skin. They are also fantastic for skin exfoliation speeding up the process of shedding dead skin cells. A peel containing glycolic acid will soften the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and improve hydration.
This peel is great to tackle ageing concerns, hyper-pigmentation, skin surface improvement, acne, and acne scars.
Lactic Acid is derived from soured milk, so this one isn’t for you if you have a milk allergy!
This is a lovely gentle peel, that helps to increase moisture levels within your skin, boosting your skins radiance and promoting all round good skin health. It’s a beautiful introductory peel and helps with ageing skin concerns such as lines & wrinkles, skin texture and dull looking skin.
Salicylic is a lipid-soluble acid. Salicylic is the main component in aspirin so will be contraindicated to those with aspirin allergies.
This is a great ingredient in Chemical Skin Peels when it comes to treating acne. It helps lift the dead skin cells off the
surface of the skin to stop them becoming clogged. This helps to prevent new spots occurring.
It works superficially, so is good for the treatment of age spots, freckles, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, it has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties so one of the most beneficial
peeling agents for acneic and sensitivity skins such as rosacea
Before we even get started on this one, yes, it actually does smell like almonds! But also, if you are allergic to nuts then this is a NO for you!
Mandelic peels have amazing antioxidant properties, moisturising effects, and an expressed bactericidal effect, this makes it a great choice for treating problematic skin with including acne, inflammation or pustular breakouts.
Mandelic can be used for sensitive, reactive skins, signs of ageing, pigmentation or on clients with darker fitzpatrick skin types as it is a superficial peel. I always remember my wonderful trainer telling me how beautifully gentle it is and how it ‘wobbles’ through the skin (it has a large molecular structure).
This is a powerful but kind ingredient that is often combined with other ingredients in combination peel formulations.
There are some amazing combination peels available today, enabling me to treat multiple concerns at once. We will talk about the different Chemical Skin Peel options available to you at your Consultation. We will be able to discuss whether a course of peel treatments is the best option for you, or whether to incorporate a peel with a more advanced treatment, such as the illumiFacial that I mentioned earlier on.
So we’ve had a brief look at some of the main ingredients in peels, so hopefully they don’t seem so scary now!
I am often asked whether Chemical Skin Peels are safe and the answer is yes, when the right peel is selected for you and applied correctly, taking into account your skin type, condition and goals – then the results are truly wonderful. You will need a full skin assessment and consultation before going ahead with a Chemical Skin Peel, and in some cases a patch test will be needed. A full assessment will ensure that I choose the correct peel for you and follow the appropriate treatment plan.
This however, is a joint effort between you and I! There are two things that are really important for you to do:
The consequences of not keeping up your end of the bargain can be poor results, or worse, trauma to your skin. Your number one rule will be to wear sunscreen, every day, even in the winter, even when it’s not sunny. EVERY DAY! Deal? Then lets get you booked in for a Consultation so you can discover your best skin yet
I have been passionate about skin (read ‘obsessed’) for the best part of a decade. Whilst I love products & treatments, I know that there is a lot more to beautiful skin than these alone.
As a qualified Nutritional Therapist, I know that what you put into your body is equally as powerful and effective as what you put onto your skin.
I have also personally experienced many skin challenges during my stressful corporate career and in more recent years, hormone related skin issues. So I have experienced first hand the effects of stress, insomnia, poor nutrition and hormone imbalances – and it’s not fun is it!
My goal is to help you to manage your skin, improve your well-being and energy levels, plus learn how to look after your skin for the long term, in a simple, sustainable way – with that little bit of luxury that we all deserve!
I know that sometimes the thought of making changes to our routines and lifestyle can be daunting, but I promise you there’s nothing radical here, it’s about helping you to create small, incremental changes for the long term. I have nearly 15 years experience as a coach, helping individuals to achieve their goals, so rest assured I will be there to help you through your transformation.
Price varies, depending on the type of peel selected, based on a full consultation and assessment of your skin. Different peel options will be discussed with you once your skin has been assessed and your treatment goals discussed.
These peels contain more than one active ingredient and target multiple skin concerns at once. Different peel options will be discussed with you once your skin has been assessed and your treatment goals discussed.
This incredible IPL illumiFacial includes a powerful tri-enzyme peel, which really helps to boost the results from IPL laser skin rejuvenation.
