Party Skin Care Tips
These party skin care tips will help you keep your skin looking its best, whilst you get on with enjoying all the fun! Festive parties are fun, but late nights, too many eggnogs & mince pies and festive stress can all play havoc with our skin.
These 5 party skin care tips are my secrets to enjoying the party season, whilst still looking after my skin. But let’s be 100% clear – I want you to go out and enjoy the party season! It’s a wonderful time to be with family and friends and don’t worry if your skin is a little worse for wear afterwards, I always share my skin detox and rebalancing tips in the New Year.
I’ve always said that your skin is a reflection of everything that is going on internally – but there are ways to combat the typical signs of too much partying – such as puffy skin, dark circles under your eyes, and even breakouts. Read on to find out more…
Party skin care tip number 1
At the top of my party skin care tips list is SLEEP and rest! I know, you’re going to be out having late nights, I get it. But please try and make time for some decent sleep (7-9 hours), as this is when your skin has a chance to repair and rejuvenate.
Whilst you sleep, your skin will remove toxins and fluids from your body and skin, and produce fresh collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid – all of those things are important for youthful, bright, and glowing skin.
Lack of sleep can cause skin to look puffy and dull and you’ll likely have dark circles under your eyes. If you can’t manage 7-9 hours a night, try and find time for some power naps in your day, so you can catch up and give your body a chance to rest and recover.
And I highly recommend those power naps on the sofa, and snuggling down with a hot chocolate and festive movie, to help you relax and destress during this busy time.
Party skin care tip number 2
The second of my party skin care tips is to ALWAYS take your makeup off. No matter how tired (or tipsy) you might be.
I know this can feel like the last thing you want to do at the end of a night, but you really don’t want to sleep in all that makeup and build-up of bacteria, dead skin cells, and grime from your day.
Finish up with a hyaluronic acid serum before bed too, to give your skin an extra boost of moisture. It will help to hydrate your skin, which is important, especially with an increase in sugar and alcohol, as these can leave the skin dehydrated.
Vitamin C Serum is also a great product to use, as it helps to brighten your skin and give it a glow. Plus using a gentle exfoliator (click for more info on exfoliation) can help to slough away dead skin cells and brighten your skin.
And, of course, I can’t write a blog on skin care and not mention your sunscreen! You know the drill, 365 days a year, come rain for shine and make sure it’s a minimum factor 30, UVA and UVB (broad spectrum) and a formula for your face.
Tip number 3
The third of my festive skin care tips is to choose mineral makeup. It’s much kinder to your skin and will reduce the risk of breakouts, and sensitivity and it’s also less of a disaster if you DO end up sleeping in it (see tip 2!).
My favorite mineral makeup is Jane Iredale. They have lots of different formulations, not just powder, and their concealers are pure magic!
Whilst we are on the subject of makeup, consider investing in a concealer or eye cream with light-reflecting particles, as this will help with those tired-looking eyes – if you’re bouncing from one party to another. Just a little word of warning if you have a light-reflecting concealer, if you apply too much of it, you’ll look like you’ve got white panda eyes in photographs when the flash goes off – it’s super light-reflecting! Less is sometimes more.
Choose a hydrating formula lipstick or gloss, as it’s not just our skin that can get dehydrated, our lips do too. I love Jane Iredale Lip Drink, or the good old Carmex cherry lip balm!
Party skin care tip number 4
In at number 4 for my festive skin care tips is nutrition. Help your skin look its best, by supporting it from the inside out.
Protein is essential for healthy collagen production – as is vitamin C. So, make the most of that turkey that’s on offer, and if you prefer not to eat meat – make sure you’re eating lots of plant-based proteins. And, remember my advice from the Autumn skin care blog, eating lots of seasonal squashes such as pumpkins and butternut are great for your skin, they are packed full of beta carotene and vitamin C, both of which are amazing at boosting your collagen levels.
I’d recommend taking a good quality vitamin C supplement with zinc, as zinc is incredible at reducing inflammation and supporting healthy skin function. My favourite is Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Vit C supplement. I’d also recommend taking a microbiome gut health supplement, as this will boost your immune system, and help reduce inflammation. Skin Youth Biome/Skin Clear Biome by ANP are excellent or have a look at Optibac.
Whilst you can do a lot to support your skin through nutrition, it’s also important to ENJOY the party season. My party skin care tips are here to help you look after your skin during this wonderful festive time, not to stop you from having fun!
Tip number 5 - Exercise & Fresh Air
My 5th party skin care tip might sound a little odd, but I promise it’s worth it! Get outside and do some exercise, it doesn’t need to be anything too strenuous. Being outside will boost your vitamin D levels and help with your energy levels, and being in nature is incredibly grounding.
Exercising will help to flush out toxins from your body and will boost your circulation and bring a glow to your skin too.
And, whilst you’re exercising make sure to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
If you’d like to really boost blood flow to your skin during exercise, then I’d highly recommend yoga. Yoga can be incredibly restorative and isn’t too stressful on the body. It can aid recovery from late-night partying and help your body to flush out toxins too. I’m a huge fan.
