There’s so much information out there telling us what we should and shouldn’t be doing, it can become overwhelming.

In this blog, I’ll go through the top FIVE skin care mistakes that are the most common. The ones that come up in conversations I have with clients during consultations, and the ones I see frequently appear on skin groups on Facebook.

They are pretty easy to fix, so don’t panic if you’ve been making some of these skin care mistakes. I’ll share advice and guidance so that you can start to make some changes straight away.

I’d also recommend you take my Skin Quiz, as you’ll get bespoke advice, based on your answers. Just click on the button below to get started.

Skin care mistake number ONE

When it comes to skin care mistakes, not cleaning your face for long enough.  You need to clean your skin for around one minute to properly clean it. The average time women spend cleaning their faces is 15-20 seconds.

Don’t be vigorous with cleaning; gently massage your cleanser into your face and neck for 60 seconds. Remove your cleanser with a soft cloth, rinse with tepid water, and pat dry with a soft towel.

This skin care mistake is the most common, but super easy to fix!

Mistake number TWO

The second of the skin care mistakes is washing your face in the shower. I know it’s convenient to do this, but please don’t.

The water in most people’s showers is far too hot for the skin on your face, and modern-day showers are pretty powerful.  Hot water being splashed on your face with force, is not good for your skin. It can damage the skin’s natural barrier function and make it more sensitive and prone to skin problems.

Another easy skin care mistake to correct, just wash your face after your shower, and use tepid water.  This is far more gentle for your skin. I like to splash with cold water afterwards, as it gives my skin a little glow – it’s also a great way to wake up in the morning too!

Mistake number THREE

Skin care mistakes aren’t just about what you’re doing to your skin externally. It’s essential to look after your skin from the inside out and outside in. One of the best things you can do for your skin (next to reducing your stress), is to prioritise sleep.

When you’re sleeping, your skin is hard at work. It produces collagen and elastin, essential for youthful and healthy skin. It is also removes toxins and fluids, and rebalances your hormones and cells.  Sleep enables your skin to produce fresh, healthy cells.

It’s called ‘beauty sleep’ for a reason! I also highly recommend a silk pillow case. It’s not a gimmick, they do make a difference. Silk pillowcases are great for your skin because they stop the drag on the skin that cotton pillow cases can cause, and they also absorb less moisture, which means your products stay on your skin and don’t end up on your pillow case!

Skin care mistake number FOUR

One of the biggest skin care mistakes for women with ageing skin concerns, is not using active ingredients.

As our skin matures, our collagen levels decline, particularly as we go through perimenopause and menopause.  Common skin care mistakes arise when we continue to use products in our forties that suited our skin in our twenties.

This is where active ingredients like vitamin C serums, AHA and BHA acids and retinols come in. You read more on ageing skin care HERE

Introducing active ingredients will boost cell turnover and increase collagen production, and address ageing skin concerns such as lines & wrinkles, sun damage and skin tone and overall skin health.  They really can give you back your glow, and brighten dull skin.

And of course, you must wear your sunscreen 365 days a year, come rain for shine! If you’re not doing this, you’re wasting money on products and treatments – because UVA rays cause up to 90% of premature ageing.

Mistake number FIVE

Arguably the biggest of the skin care mistakes is lifestyle. The biggest, because it encompasses multiple factors that affect your skin.

Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and it will respond to everything that is happening internally and externally. Stress, next to sun exposure, is the most damaging thing for our skin – click on the button below to learn how.

Exercise and nutrition also play critical roles. Nourishing your skin from within is vital for optimal skin health. I’ve written many blogs on this topic, which you’ll find in the blog section. A holistic approach will always work best for your skin, which is why I always bring my nutritional therapy background into my skin programs.
