Skin Tightening Facial - What's is all about?

What IS a skin tightening facial? There are a number of facials that claim to be skin tightening, but what are they really doing?

A TRUE skin tightening facial is one that boosts your collagen and elastin levels in your skin, which are the two key proteins, responsible for supple, plump and youthful skin.  Treatments that boost your natural production of collagen and elastin will speed up your cell turn over, boost your existing levels, AND improve the quality of your collagen and elastin. The results are not only tightening and lifting, but also reduced lines & wrinkles and improve skin tone and texture too.

TRUE skin tightening facial treatments include radiofrequency microneedling, HIFU, radiofrequency, Ultherapy and fractional laser – to name a few. Beware of treatments that target the muscle, or surface of the skin – and claim to be skin tightening, they are not true skin tightening facial treatments, and require regular treatments to see the benefits, and the results are not long lasting.

Collagen boosting facial treatment

The magic happens in skin tightening facials, when your collagen and elastin levels are boosted, in the deeper layers of your skin.

The most effective way to boost collagen and elastin at depth, is via thermal trauma. Thermal trauma heats the skin to a very specific temperature, which causes a minor controlled trauma in the deeper layers. As part of your natural healing process, your skin will product collagen and elastin to repair itself, and contracts and tightens in response to the trauma. Thermal trauma can be delivered in different ways. Radiofrequency and fractional laser are treating the surface layers of the skin, triggering collagen induction in the deeper layers from the surface.

Radiofrequency microneedling introduces the thermal trauma into the layers of your skin when the needles are in the skin – a double whammy from the collagen induction of microneedling, and the introduction of heat at depth.

And HIFU specifically targets the deeper layers of the skin only, bypassing trauma to the surface of the skin (this is the case for the Focus Dual HIFU, but please be aware that other forms of HIFU DO heat the surface of the skin and can be painful).  Focus Dual HIFU is not painful, and some clients fall asleep!

What is radiofrequency microneedling?

I’m going to start with radiofrequency microneedling, as it’s my favourite, and most popular skin tightening facial.  The reason it’s such a hit, is because it has multiple benefits to your skin, not just skin tightening.

Like all forms of microneedling, radiofrequency microneedling is a collagen induction treatment, which means that your skin is naturally boosted to increase both the quality and quantity of collagen AND elastin.

It also has the additional benefit of the thermal trauma from radiofrequency, which triggers even more collagen and elastin production. When it comes to skin tightening facial treatments, this one is where you get the most benefits for your investment – as it improves your skin in multiple ways.

Skin tightening with HIFU

Whilst RF microneedling is my superhero skin tightening facial treatment, HIFU comes a close second.

HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a thermal treatment, that picks up where RF microneedling leaves off. HIFU targets the deeper layers of your skin, and can target the layer that a plastic surgeon would work on, for a face lift (hence the reason its known as a non surgical face-lift). By targeting your skin at multiple layers, you’re optimising your collagen and elastin levels, and achieving amazing results that are long lasting.

HIFU skin tightening facial treatments work really well alongside radiofrequency microneedling for mature clients, that have saggy jowls, turkey neck or loss of facial volume. It’s also great for you, if you’re not so concerned about lines & wrinkles, but want to focus solely on tightening and lifting. HIFU is a ‘slow burn’ treatment, in that it takes 3-6 months to see the full results.

How many skin tightening facials will I need?

The number of skin tightening facial treatments you need will depend on a number of factors.  Your age, skin type, skin goals and lifestyle all play an important role.  When we work together, we look at all the factors that influence your skin, and create a program that is bespoke for you, to help you achieve your best possible results.   You’ll also be able to look after your skin for the long term, to help you achieve better skin for life.

To give you a little insight into how many skin tightening treatments you may need, radiofrequency microneedling is typically a course of 3-6 treatments initially, before moving into maintenance. HIFU is 1-3 treatments, before moving into maintenance.  You may only need 1 HIFU treatment, if you are combining it with radiofrequency microneedling. The results from both are long lasting, with the full results being present 3-6 months AFTER your final treatment – now those really are long lasting results!

The best thing to do is to book a consultation, so we can have a chat about your skin goals.  You can do that by clicking on the link below, and selecting the day/time that suits you.

Are facials enough to get me the best results?

Skin tightening facial treatments ARE amazing, but your results will be so much better when combined with lifestyle choices, nutrition and skin care.

Your skin is the largest organ of your body and is entirely unique to you. There are so many things that can affect your skin, which means that the power is absolutely in your hands to make some BIG changes.

When we work together, you’ll learn about all the factors that influence your skin. You’ll be able to identify some quick and easy changes you can make, and have the tools to understand your skin so much better, so you can achieve better skin for life.

We look at the inside out and the outside in, to help you truly discover how to get your best possible skin, both now and for the long term.

Boost your facial treatments with active ingredients

The results from skin tightening facial treatments can be boosted with active skin care ingredients, such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and retinol, and of course – sunscreen!

Once the treatments have worked their magic and boosted your natural collagen and elasin levels, a good quality anti ageing skin care routine can maximise the results.

Vitamin C is essential to healthy collagen production, hyaluronic acid can hold 1000 times it’s weight in moisture and retinol speeds up cell turnover and boosts collagen production AND quality.  Sunscreen protects your skin against UV rays, and UVA rays (present all year round), are responsible for 80-90% of premature ageing!

Skin care containing active ingredients can help you maintain the results from your treatments for longer, meaning you need less frequency maintenance treatments. And in case you think medical grade skin care is super expensive, it’s not  – it often means you spend LESS, not more, and you achieve better results! It typically works out less per day than a take away coffee (yes, seriously!).
