What is RF Microneedling?

Get ready to meet the super hero of scar improvement treatments! RF Microneedling combines microneedling and radiofrequency benefits, in one powerful treatment.

Microneedling has been successfully used as a treatment for scars for several years. It involves creating micro punctures in your skin, which help to break down old scar tissue, and stimulate fresh new collagen and elastin. Microneedling also stimulates the production of melanin within your skin, which is what’s responsible for your natural skin tone.

Introducing RF (radiofrequency) into your microneedling treatments, further stimulates collagen and elastin production within your skin, giving you even better results. Our Focus Dual has a unique way of delivering RF microneedling treatments, due it’s ultra fine (0.16mm) needles and the introduction of a vacuum, to ensure your treatment is delivered precisely to the correct depth, meaning that you experience targeted and safe treatments.

Why do we have scars?

Scars are perfectly natural, and nearly all of us have them! Scars form when the deeper layers of your skin are damaged (the dermis). The body forms new collagen fibres during the wound healing process, and this collagen is different to the type of collagen that is found in healthy skin.

When your skin is damaged, your body goes into what I call ‘rapid response’ mode. Your body is incredibly clever, and it moves into ‘heal and seal’ mode, fighting infection and sealing the wound as quickly as possible. As your body is basically in shock, it focuses on repairing and healing the wound, but the quality and structure of new collagen is different.

Scars are what you’re left with after your body has finished healing. These could be raised, sunken, loose, tight, and even have some pigmentation or redness to them. Everyone is different, but scars typically take 6-12 months to heal, with some up to 2 years.

What type of scars can RF Microneedling help with?

Microneedling with RF for scars is quickly becoming the ‘go to’ treatment. It’s really versatile and can be used to treat most scars on the face and body can be treated, including:

• Surgery and injury scars.
• Hair transplant scars.
• Self-harm scars.
• Acne scars.
• Hypertrophic scars (raised white scars).
• Sunken scars.
• Stretch marks.

Keloid scarring is not suitable for treatment. Keloid scarring is where the scar tissue grows outside of the wound site and is often red/purple in colour. This type of scarring is often confused with hypertrophic scars, which are white and raised.

Your scars will need to be healed before you are able to have a RF microneedling treatment. Scars that are still going through their natural healing process are not suitable for treatment.

What can I expect after my RF Microneedling scar treatment?

The great thing about RF microneedling scar improvement treatments, is that there is minimal downtime.  After your treatment, you can expect your skin to look red and it may feel a little warm, as if you have mild sunburn. Your scars will remain red for a few days after your treatment, whilst your skin is in the early stages of recovery. You will need to follow the aftercare provided, treating the area as a minor wound.

Everyone will experience different results after RF microneedling scar treatments. You may notice a difference after just one treatment, but a course of 3-5 is a ‘typical’ course of treatment. Treatments for microneedling with RF take place 3-4 weeks apart. The full results of your treatments will be around 3-6 months after your final treatment, once your skin has been through the dermal remodelling and production of healthy collagen, elastin, and melanin.

How long do the results of RF Microneedling last?

And the great news is, that due to the way Focus Dual works, the results are long-lasting. This treatment stimulates the production of new, strong collagen, elastin, and melanin.

For most scars, once you have completed your course of RF microneedling scar treatments, you will not need to have any further treatments.  The exception to this is where further damage to the skin takes place.  Stretchmarks may require maintenance treatments.

Some Frequency asked questions

As your skin is the largest organ in your body, and entirely unique to you, it’s not possible to be exact on the number of treatments that you’ll require. A ‘typical’ course of treatment would be 3-5 treatments that take place 3-4 weeks apart. However, you can continue to have treatment until you are happy with the results, or your skin stops responding to the RF microneedling scar treatments.

RF Microneedling treatments are virtually pain free, although you may feel a little discomfort. Prior to your treatment, the area will be thoroughly cleaned and prepped, ready for microneedling. The specialist handpiece is passed over your skin, and you can expect to feel a light pressure as the needles create micro “channels” in your skin, to trigger new collagen production. As the needles enter your skin, radiofrequency energy is also distributed deep into the deeper layers of your skin (dermis). You’ll feel warmth in area treated.

You will need to have a consultation so that your scars can be assessed. We will then advise you on the exact cost of each treatment. Treatment times and cost are dependant on the type of scarring that you have, and how long we will require to treat you.

Your treatment program is created just for you. We will work with you to create an RF microneedling scar treatment program that will help you to achieve results that we are confident that you will love.

Unlike invasive procedures and many non-invasive procedures, Focus Dual RF microneedling scar treatments involve virtually no downtime. After treatment you might experience redness and swelling at the treatment site- but this is minor, and usually disappears after a few days. This is what makes RF microneedling such a popular choice for scar improvement treatments. You’ll be given full aftercare instructions. You’ll need to avoid swimming pools, sauna’s spa’s etc for 10 days. You’ll need to avoid exercise for 48 hours and anything else that raises body temparature.
